Welcome to Crabtree Sculpture!
I’m Matt Hobbs, a lifelong craftsman learning about and making art.
I’ve worked as a furniture maker and restoration carpenter my entire adult life, at times as my vocation and presently on the side. In the last decade, I’ve been trying to learn “fine" art. I’m particularly drawn to figural sculpture, both in historical contexts and in my own artistic practice.
After taking a number of clay sculpture classes with a local artist, I built and opened a new studio in Raleigh NC in 2023 to advance as a sculptor and to host other artists of all levels. I'm solidly in the early learning part of my journey, but I'm growing with every hour of studio time.
While generally there's no formal instruction in our workshops, we support each other as we work together. Participants are asked to pay their share of costs for model fees, any shared materials, instructors fees (if applicable) and/or other services--an estimate can be provided ahead of time. Participants must agree to follow the studio etiquette.
